Experiencing Oneness

Have you ever had an experience where you felt connected to something larger than yourself?

Perhaps you were witnessing a magnificent sunset, contemplating a clear night sky, or watching ocean waves roll in.

Perhaps you were holding a newborn child or gazing into the eyes of a beloved.

Or the awareness may have arisen while meditating or saying a prayer.

Regardless of how it arose, in that moment it may have seemed so clear that you are not an isolated fragment, adrift in a sea of life. You may have felt that you are part of an infinite and interconnected web of life, an integral part of an unbounded field of consciousness.

Because, indeed, you are that. You are part of oneness itself and can never be separated from it.

And with practice, you can come to experience yourself as part of this oneness, more and more frequently. One common access point is to be in stillness and silence, so you can awaken to your true nature.

You are consciousness itself, experiencing a human life. Your true nature is eternal, the witness who observes your day-to-day experiences and learns and grows from whatever unfolds without getting trapped within those experiences. As you explore the truth of this, you may naturally become increasingly rooted in a state of deep and abiding peace.

As the poet Rumi wrote:

When I am silent, I fall into the place where everything is music.

Here are five practices you can apply to deepen your experience of oneness:

  • Set aside time to be in stillness and observe what happens. Your thinking mind is constantly focused on the physical reality of your life. It perceives through the lens of I, me, mine. Meditation or other practices can help quiet the mind, making it easier to experience a state of oneness. This can help you begin to perceive through the lens of we, us, ours.

  • Pay attention to the moments when you feel connected to something greater than yourself. What is happening? What do you experience as a result? How does that make you feel?

  • Express gratitude for the experiences that enable you to perceive yourself as part of something greater. A state of gratitude affects you on an energetic level, making it easier to have additional experiences of a similar nature.

  • Practice communing with your guides to deepen the lines of communication. You have non-physical guides that can assist you as your life unfolds. Allow your ability to connect with guides to serve as an example of how you are part of something greater than yourself. • Consider how the reality of oneness might affect how you engage in your life and with others. How might knowing that you are part of something greater than yourself change or soften how you respond to the circumstances or challenges that unfold in your life day-to-day?

When you take actions to help you experience a state of oneness, you open to the possibility of finding the place that Rumi described, where everything is music.
