Being Peace: Blessings for the year ahead

How do we cultivate a sense of inner peace in challenging times?

As the year gets under way, there is a flood of news coming at us about turmoil and strife – whether from around the world or closer to home. So it is not surprising that we may sometimes feel overwhelmed, scared or even despondent in the face of this.

When it feels like things have become too much, remember that inner peace is always possible because it is not dependent on what is happening in the external world. When we recognize how the news and social media can leave us feeling emotionally triggered, we can take steps to return to a state of balance and Peace.

The following practices can help you with this. They can also help smooth the path forward for the year ahead and beyond

  • Understand that much of the “news” we are presented with is often shaped to advance a particular point of view. Consider the source of the information and what might be motivating a person or an organization to push a particular narrative. Who benefits if you believe what you read or are told? When we understand that someone is trying sell us on a point of view, we realize that we are seeing just one perspective, which can dampen the emotional impact.

  • Separate fact from fiction. A lot of what is presented as “news” items are just opinion pieces. Consider how the information you are encountering has been verified, if at all. How reliable is the source? How likely is it that a potential event will even happen? Having a more realistic perspective can lessen the effects of any speculation that we come across in what we read or watch.

  • Take a break from consuming news and social media. If you’re feeling emotionally triggered by the news that is coming your way, it may be a sign that you need to step away. There’s no benefit in allowing others to push your buttons. You may reduce your stress levels and get off the emotional rollercoaster by cutting back on how much news you consume. You may even want to take a vacation from your devices now and again.

  • Make time for self-care. Self-care is always important – and even more so during turbulent times. Prioritize nourishing foods, plenty of rest, and sufficient exercise, as well as carving out some regular time to go within. Spending time in quiet contemplation or meditation can help calm an anxious mind or balance tumultuous emotions.

  • Prioritize actions that are meaningful to you. Too much negative news and doom scrolling can make you feel sad or powerless. Taking actions that help you see you can make a difference can. These actions can be uplifting while highlighting that you do have power. Whether it’s helping a neighbor, doing volunteer work, participating in a community event or making a donation – the actions we take that bring meaning to our lives can be both healing and transformative.

  • Make time to focus on what brings you Joy. Do you love to paint? Write? Play music? Dance? Bake? Spending time doing things you love can have a restorative effect for mind, body and spirit. When you live from a state of Joy, life unfolds with more ease and grace. We also come to see that this inner Joy can be sustained, regardless of what unfolds in the outer world.

  • Be the Peace. When things get rocky and the world feels like a chaotic place, remember that you can be an energetic anchor for Peace. Breathe in Divine Peace. Choose, allow and accept it. Anchor it inside you. You may feel the energy permeate through you. Then allow this Peace to radiate out to everyone around you. Allow them to accept it if they so choose.

Consider making these seven actions that we have just explored part of your day-to-day approach to navigating your life and the world. May they bring you blessings and Joy for 2026 and beyond.
