Deepening Your Inner Guidance

Do you ever have moments of insight or clarity that arise from a quiet voice within?

This type of guidance generally surfaces of its own accord, without your needing to actively think long and hard about a particular matter to gain it.

A common source of inner guidance is your intuition.  An intuitive insight is said to be shaped by your subconscious mind, which leverages your accumulated knowledge and experiences to form a perspective without your having to apply conscious reasoning to the matter. This is why an intuitive insight is often referred to as a “gut feel.”

When we consider guidance from a spiritual vantage point, we realize that we may also receive guidance from non-physical beings who seek to assist us. These may be your own guides as well as other beings that may have a connection to you.

Intuitive guidance and spiritual guidance can both yield a felt knowingness about something that arises without your rational mind getting involved. It is important to understand that guidance gained from either source is not guaranteed to be correct. Other considerations – such as your beliefs, your emotional state or your mental state – can interfere with the flow of clear guidance. That’s why seeking guidance while in a peaceful state can be helpful.

Here are seven steps you can take to cultivate your awareness of guidance from within:

  • Approach opening to deeper inner guidance with a sense of respect and gratitude for sacred connections. This sets the stage for things to unfold with more ease and grace.

  • Devote time for meditation or quiet contemplation to deepen your connection to inner guidance. A meditative state is helpful because when you quiet your rational or thinking mind, discerning your quiet inner voice becomes easier. 

  • Engage in spiritually oriented practices. Activities such a prayer work or working with mantras can create an access point for stillness and connection.

  • Spend time in nature. As with meditation and spiritual practices, time in nature can help you still the mind chatter and become more grounded. This can make it easier to become more aware of your own inner guidance.

  • Allow your creativity to blossom. Engaging in creative pursuits – such as painting, writing, music or other endeavors – can also foster a more meditative state of being. This, in turn, can nurture the creative endeavors by enabling you to stoke the creative fires that arise from deep within.

  • Open yourself to receiving guidance from your non-physical guides.  While in a meditative state, express your desire to receive insights and support from your guides. Start by stating that you want to create a safe and protected space for this connection and allow communications only from beings who are of the light and serve the light. Pay attention to what unfolds. 

  • Keep track of the insights you receive. You may choose to keep a journal so over time, you can directly observe how your access to inner guidance changes. Note any messages you receive. People perceive guidance in a variety of ways. People typically associate guidance with a sudden felt knowingness. Messages can also come in other ways. You may hear something, see something or notice something that conveys a message. You may even receive valuable insights through a dream.
