The Power of the Present Moment
On any given day, how much time do you spend focused on what is happening in the present moment, versus contemplating the past or the future?
It’s an important question because while it is easy to have your thoughts drift to matters that don’t relate to what is going on here and now, the real power in your life is in the now moment.
That’s because more energetically expansive states – including the ability to connect with our own true nature – can only be accessed when you are fully in the present moment.
This is the true power of the present moment. It is the only place where you can make decisions and implement changes in your life. Further, it is only in the present moment that you can connect to your higher self, guidance, and Divinity itself. The habitual focus on past and future does not open the gateway to this.
As author C.S. Lewis noted:
The Present is the point at which time touches eternity.
When you ruminate on the past or worry about the future, the events you may be envisioning aren’t real in the present moment. Yet they can take still take a heavy emotional toll on you. So there are many benefits to developing tools and practices to help you stay in the present moment.
One of the ways to stay anchored in the present moment is to focus on the sensory experiences that are unfolding around you or within you right now.
What are you aware of in this moment? Is there traffic thrumming in the distance? Can you hear birdsong or observe clouds drifting by in the sky? Can you perceive the chair beneath you? A chill in the air? The scent of your morning coffee? Can you feel the inflow and outflow of your breath?
Focusing on the breath is a traditional meditation practice because it draws your attention inward, to what is happening within you. You may observe that the mind chatter lessens and that you become better at allowing thoughts to come and go, without having them stir you emotionally.
Over time, a mediation practice can help you access inner peace and stillness with greater ease, while also opening you to more expansive energetic states. In the face of the many profound challenges and changes that are unfolding on the planet, the ability to access these states of being is now vitally important.
These days, we find ourselves bombarded with grim updates and dire warnings through the news and social media. All that doomscrolling can be quite anxiety provoking. Without discernment and reliable practices for staying grounded and in the present moment, it is easy to find ourselves in a triggered state and fearful of the future.
As author and Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh wrote:
Anxiety, the illness of our time, comes primarily from our inability to dwell in the present moment.
So now, more than ever, we need to build tools and practices to keep us anchored in the present moment.
Our latest energetic YouTube video was developed to help you practice being in the present moment and we invite you to check it out. The video includes energetic processes that help you enter a meditative state, so you can feel more peaceful, grounded and connected. As you listen, you may notice that we have also embedded bird song periodically. See if you can notice that too!
