Knowing Yourself as Consciousness
“Be in the world but not of it.”
This often quoted saying offers a profound insight on how to live in accordance with your true nature.
While some may believe that we are just a mind in a body, living out a finite existence, the truth is that we are so much more than that.
We are consciousness itself, experiencing a human life. Our true nature is eternal, the witness who observes our day-to-day experiences and learns and grows from whatever unfolds without getting enmeshed within that.
As we explore the truth of this, we become increasingly rooted in a state of deep and abiding peace. Step by step, we come to see that this human journey is about gaining experiences and insights that ultimately illuminate our true nature.
As a soul, you have chosen to come here at this time to experience all that your life entails. From our vantage point as ego, mind and body we tend to categorize our experiences as good or bad, happy or sad. But as consciousness, we can view them all as unfolding experiences that give way to new experiences.
As a soul having a human experience, you are part of an infinite field of consciousness, also referred to as the quantum field. This is why so many spiritual teachers talk about the importance of being in a state of non-judgment. All experiences have the capacity to create opportunities for learning and growth.
Further, knowing yourself as consciousness is not a rarefied experience available to just a few. It is accessible to everyone who is willing to experience the reality of their true nature.
As a first step, you can become more aware of the energy that flows through you all the time. You can open to such an experience right now. Close your eyes and become aware of what you sense. Do you feel a flow or buzz of energy within you or around you? This energy is part of the quantum field just as you are. Sensing the flow of energy can be a first step towards experiencing yourself energetically as consciousness.
You can also allow yourself to be more present to that facet of yourself that just witnesses your life without judgment. This state of pure awareness in the present moment is consciousness itself.
Meditation practices can serve as an access point to yourself as consciousness because they bring you into a state of stillness where you can more readily access the divine within.
Yet formal study is not a prerequisite for knowing yourself as consciousness. Just spend a few minutes every day in quiet contemplation, focusing inward. Ask to be shown more about who you really are and allow things to unfold.
Our latest YouTube video includes energetic processes that can help you enter a meditative state and experience yourself as consciousness. We invite you to check it out.
This is how you can come to be in the world but not of it. You experience life while simultaneously knowing that there is more to your true nature than this human existence. Integrating this bigger picture – this broader knowingness – can help ease what we perceive as the stings of everyday life while opening the door to a more profound sense of peace.
A similar perspective is echoed in the works of the poet Rumi, who wrote:
"This place is a dream.
Only a sleeper considers it real.
Then death comes like dawn,
and you wake up laughing
at what you thought was your grief.”
